Welcome to the historical Levi Tenney House, 100 PACE PARK ROAD, a charming Bed & Breakfast Inn in Salado, Texas.  It is perhaps the oldest building in the village of Salado and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  It dates from the 1850s and was the residence of Levi Tenney, a Presbyterian minister and the first President of Salado College.

The Levi Tenney House is a Greek Revival style home typical of the era with large  rooms and tall ceilings.  The beautifully crafted 16 inch thick rock walls are made from native limestone, quarried, trimmed and built by slaves.  The house has been beautifully preserved inside and out.

Nicely shaded over-sized brick patio

Each owner has taken care to insure that original authenticity was always maintained.  The wood floor upstairs and all plaster walls have been maintained.  The cypress wood doorways and moldings around the interior bedroom doors are original.  The other details such as wooden floors, wooden ceilings and plaster walls are either original or added so professionally that you cannot distinguish between the old and the new.  The few added rooms are very tastefully done in keeping with 1855 architecture in Texas.

Yard with Magnificent Live Oak Trees

The beautiful grounds are enhanced with ten magnificent Live Oak trees that provide shade and beauty for our visitors to enjoy year round.  Some of the trees may have been here when the home was built over 140 years ago.  Throughout the grounds you will notice interesting antique machinery that was used for making saddles.  The equipment belonged to Terry's great-great-grandfather, a saddle maker.

Relax in one of our swings.

We are in the heart of the shopping district 1/2 block off Main Street, Salado Creek, and Pace Park.  The Inn is within easy walking distance to shops and restaurants.   When you get back from shopping and sightseeing, the swing is always a nice way to relax.  Everyone loves our swings.

It is likely that this building was built early in the settlement of the area, as you will note on the original wall of the building, tall narrow slots.  These are rifle ports which were to be used to fire at marauding Indians.  That part of the home was the original "fort" for the family that occupied the house.

A Little History of the Levi Tenney House and Salado

The village of Salado was established in 1859  when Sterling Robertson, who was the empresario for this Spanish land grant gave 100 acres to be divided into lots and constitute the new town of Salado.   Proceeds from the sale of the lots were to be used to fund Salado College, an institution for the education of the children and young people of settlers in this area.

The Levi Tenney House was built in the 1850s and was known as the "Parson's House".   Levi Tenney was a Presbyterian Pastor and the first President of Salado College.

The land that the home sits on which extends down to the road on the south, to the fence on the west and to the red barn is part of an Indian campground that dates to pre-history.  Flint tools and arrowheads are frequently found on the grounds and in the immediate area.

Salado Creek made this area popular as a watering hole for people passing through.  Pioneers, cowboys, bandits, and lawmen all came through our area.  Sam Bass is one of the outlaws who passed through.  As this area was being settled, the grounds were used as a meeting place for the pioneers and immigrants.

The famous Tablerock is in Salado Creek just 200 yards east of the home.  Several pioneer industries were in the immediate vicinity of the home, such as a mill, a tanning yard, and a distillery.
